Alliance Party officially registered to contest 2026 General Election

The Electoral Commission has officially approved the registration of the Alliance Party of Aotearoa New Zealand and its logo, clearing the way for the party to contest the nationwide party vote in the General Election on Saturday 7 November 2026.

The decision marks a major milestone in the relaunch of the party and means New Zealanders across the country will have the opportunity to cast a party vote for a democratic socialist alternative.

Alliance Party Leader Victor Billot says official registration clears the path for the Alliance to provide a strong and uncompromising voice for working people and those marginalised by the present system.

“Official registration confirms that the Alliance is back and will be campaigning for the party vote nationwide,” Mr Billot says.

“For too long, the working-class majority has been forced to choose between slight variations of the same status quo. The Alliance has returned to the political landscape to offer a clear and principled alternative focused on economic justice, workers’ rights and public ownership.”

Mr Billot says the party has built strong momentum since announcing its relaunch, with growing membership across Aotearoa and candidates stepping forward in key electorates.

He says the affiliation of the Maritime Union of New Zealand with the Alliance Party has also been a major game-changer, putting the political establishment on notice.

“People are hungry for real solutions to the cost-of-living crisis, decaying public infrastructure and underfunded public services.

“Our platform puts human needs before private profit. It calls for progressive tax reform, the return of key energy and transport assets to public ownership, free healthcare – including dental care – and a major state housing programme delivered through a re-established Ministry of Works.

“A party vote for the Alliance on 7 November will send a clear message that business as usual is unacceptable. We look forward to taking our campaign into communities throughout Aotearoa over the coming weeks.”

Background

The Alliance was founded in 1991 as a broad-left political party advocating social democracy, public ownership and workers’ rights. It entered Parliament in 1993 and served as the junior partner in the Labour–Alliance coalition government formed following the 1999 General Election. After a prolonged period of extra-parliamentary political activity, the party relaunched and is contesting the 2026 General Election as a democratic socialist alternative.
